UM-SLA/SLA@WSU Pumpkin Carving Fun!

October 14, 2008

Hello SLAers -

Need to get your pumpkin ready for Halloween – here’s your opportunity!

I thought it would be nice to get the UofM SLA chapter and the Wayne State SLA chapter together for a mixer.  A good chance to meet some fellow library students, and see what cool things everyone has been doing in their library programs and internships.

What: Pumpkin Carving!
When: Saturday October 25th: 6:00pm if you want to get a pumpkin, 7:00pm pumpkin carving commences!
Where: Elaine Engstrom’s house

Here’s the plan:
We’ll meet at my house, then travel about a 1/2 mile to the Pumpkin Factory located at 48651 Harris Rd., Belleville, MI 48111 (1 country block south of my house). We’ll get our pumpkins, some cider and some donuts and head back to my house for pumpkin carving.  If everyone could pitch in a few bucks (maybe $2) for some goodies that would be great.

Just FYI, I have a very sweet German Shepherd dog named Riley, and a grumpy cat named Pfeffer if you are allergic or just plain don’t like pets. I have some pumpkin carving tools and knives, but you might want to bring your favorite pumpkin design ideas and any carving tools you need.

Hope to see you all there!

Elaine Engstrom
(on behalf of UofM SLA student chapter)

SAA/SLA Lansing Trip Update

October 9, 2008

Things have finally been solidified for the Lansing trip!

What: Tours of the Archives of Michigan, MSU Comic Art Collection, and the MSU Vincent Voice Library.

When: Saturday, October 18, at 10am, 12noon, and 1pm respectively.

Where: Lansing, MHAL complex; East Lansing, Michigan State University Library.

RSVP: Please respond to this post if you’re interested in going!  This way we can coordinate rides.  Please include in your reply whether you can drive and, if so, how many seats are available in your car.

BYO lunch (bring or buy), as we’ll be eating between the first and second tours.

Also, bring maybe $4 (just to be safe) for bus fare.  Due to the MSU home football game, parking could get hairy, and we’ll want to be able to take public transit between wherever we end up parking and campus.

This event is bound to be plenty of fun and really illuminating regarding these three very different collections.

SAA/SLA Trip: Archives of Michigan and MSU Comic Collection

October 1, 2008

Dear all,

On Saturday, October 18, SAA and SLA will be joining forces to bring you a day of Lansing-area excitement!  In the morning, we’ll be visiting the Archives of Michigan on a personal tour led by the state archivist (tour starting at 10am).  In the afternoon, we’ll be visiting the MSU Special Collections to get a tour of the Comic Collection (time TBA).  We’ll update later on how best to coordinate ride-sharing (Lance and I have to coordinate amongst ourselves, first).
